International Museum Day 19.5.2019
This year’s slogan is
“Museums as Cultural Hubs: The Future of Tradition”.
Therefore we invite you to visit the Sorbian Museum on the 19th of May, to see some creative art works, which were made by students of the Sorbian high school in Bautzen. Entrance free.
In memory of Jan Buck
“The credo of my work is the Lusatia with all their nuances and shades. Each motif, that I paint, I am feeling Sorbian.” (Jan Buck)
We are mourning for the painter Jan Buck. He was such a famous Sorbian visual artist.
2.8.1922 – 1.4.2019
Jan Buck made the way for a new era in the Sorbian visual arts. He managed with his art works to build the bridge to the European modern spirit. He showed to the next generation of young Sorbian artists, that there are more possibilities than just traditional art. Questions about light, perspectives, colours, structures and shapes have always been very important to Jan Buck.
The Sorbian Museum has got the largest collection with about 70 works. There are oil paintings, water coloured paintings, temperas and hand drawings.

Call for Competition “SORBIAN STREET STYLE”
Call for Competition “SORBIAN STREET STYLE” by Volksbank Dresden-Bautzen eG and Sorbisches Museum in Bautzen, Germany, 1 February 2019 – 31 May 2019
Theme: “The key to modern fashion lies in the union of tradition and the avant-garde.” (Valentino Garavani, Italian designer)
New modern fashion and Lusatian design drawing on the elements of traditional Sorbian costumes and Lusatian folk art do not represent a contradiction but a commitment to the area, to home.
The competition, which is to support young Lusatian fashion design “SORBIAN STREET STYLE”, and the exhibition of the same name by Sorbisches Museum in Bautzen are meant to set a trend and example for Lusatia, which, in the face of structural and demographic change, needs new concepts and ideas. Besides established designers and fashion creators, young artists and designers, not only from Lusatia but from Germany and the Euroregion Neisse-Nisa-Nysa, are to be given a platform.
The competition for young fashion creators and artists, aged from 18 to 35 years, is a cooperation project organised by Volksbank Dresden-Bautzen eG, Sorbisches Museum in Bautzen and the Centre for Cultural and Creative Industries Saxony, running from 1 February 2019 until 31 May 2019. The prize money for the three winners is provided by Volksbank Dresden-Bautzen eG, the Newcomer Prize is sponsored by Sorbisches Museum. In the exhibition “SORBIAN STREET STYLE” at Sorbisches Museum in Bautzen, open from 22 September 2019 until 1 March 2020, and in the accompanying catalogue as well as across the network of the Centre for Cultural and Creative Industries Saxony, winning products and collections will be effectively promoted.
