Heritage day was a good success for the Sorbian Museums!
With more than 550 visitors this years Open-monument –day in Germany was quite succesful fot the Sorbian Museum. Many visitors still knew the area around the castle from their childhood, as they grew up in the core-part of the old town of Bautzen.
We intend to identify as an open object for the Open-monument day by the typical yellow flag next year as well.
As the topic of this year was “Power and splendour” the main topic of the museum-building was the audience hall of the museum, the former courtroom of the Schwurgericht . Reproductions of archive-documents from the 19nth century as well as rather recent photographs of the reconstruction works from 1987-1989 were displayed.

„Tree of hope” filled with plenty of wishes
Inspired by the quote accredited to Martin Luther „If I knew, that tomorrow the world would go to pieces, I would still plant an appletree”, a „tree of hope” was set up in our recent special exhibition. It was richly filled by young and adult visitors with their wishes and dreams. But what kind of wishes were hung up the most? Most important for our visitors seems to be peace and health. But there are many personal goals and dreams concerning the family, work and the personal future to be found. Now, that the special exhibition is over the „tree” was repot into the cabinet and can be seen by our visitors. Another smaller „tree” was made by the Sorbian school of Ralbitz during a project-day. The pupils looked into the matter of wishes and assigned wishes and thoughts to the roots, the trunk and the treetop, including wishes for the preservation of Lusatia [the local region] and the sorbian/wendish language. We follow with that wishes!
Exposition about the reformational movement ends with success
Sunday, august the 27nth 2017 the exposition “Five centuries. The Sorbs and the reformational movement” was finished with a very festive finissage. The programme around the exhibition contained nine public appointements. Apart of three public lectures, seven public guided tours through the exhibition provided deeper insights into the theme.
A lot of school- and after-school groups have seen the exhibition, mostly in combination with an pedagogical programme.
The amount of visitors by the end of the exhibition is a bit less then 5900, while the number for the visitors of the parallel-exhibition at St. Michaelis is circa 4800, alltogether 10700 visitors.
All in all we are very happy with a succesful exhibition, that informed a lot of people about the importance of the reformational movement for the sorbian culture.
Lecture of Dr. Lubina Mahling „Herrnhut und die Sorben – Herrnhut and the Sorbs“
Lecture given in sorbian with simaltaneous translation into german.
Wednesday, the 23.8.2017 at 7.00 p.m.
From Greenland, over South Africa up to Australia the Moravian Church (Brethren’s Congregation from Herrnhut) is valued for its missionary work. Their accomplishments among the the Sorbs are little known however. The encounter with the Moravian Church did not just change the lives of many hundreds Sorbs from Upper and Lower Lusatia, but had an enormous effect upon the rural communities, the sorbian-wendish education environment as well as the literature.
